"Quiet Life" by Taku Iwasaki |
Description A group of slaves are attacked by bandits and everyone are killed except for a kid named Shinta, who only survives because another swordsman shows up and slays the bandits. Later the swordsman comes upon an astonishing sight, the kid has buried all he's comrades, which is quite a feat for such a small child. The swordsman decides to take the boy as an apprentice, and give him the name Kenshin, because Shinta isn't a suitable warrior's name.
Some years later, Kenshin has become an excellent swordsman, but isn't yet fully trained. He desides to leave his teacher and go into the world to help the people in need. Instead of helping people he ends up as an assassin for the revolutionaries, and that's where the story begins.

Review First of note that this anime goes by many names, Rurouni Kenshin OAV, Samurai X, Samurai X: Reminiscence, Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. I belive the name you should look for when buying it on DVD is Trust and Betrayal.
Trust and Betrayal is the prequel for the 95 episode series Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X), but works prefectly well as a stand alone OVA, which means that you should check it out even if you have no intention of watching the series itself.
It doesn't matter whether you like samurai anime or not, or even if you've never seen anime, this is a must see piece of art. Beisdes it's only 4 act's long (4 times 30 minutes) so it won't take that much of your precious time.
The animations and sounds are very well done, and play well into the mood of the story. The story is a drama about love and loss, flavoured with plenty of action and bloodshed, based in 1864 just before the Meiji Revolution, where Kenshin works as a hitokiri for the revolutionaries.
In conclusion all I have to stay is check this one out, it's worth it.
