Description The year is 2100; on a research facility on the moon Kurau Amami, daughter of Chief scientist Amami, in an accident, is struck by a flash of light and disintegrates. To all who witness' disbelief, she somehow is revived seconds later. She is no longer Dr. Amami's little girl however, a force which calls itself Rynax now resides within her, and there seems no way to reverse the process.
Years pass and Kurau takes on the job as an Agent, a type of mercenary problem solver. But she lives an unhappy and unfulfilled life. For Rynax comes in pairs, and hers has been slumbering, hurt and damaged inside her. But that's all about to change. |
Review After living alone for years, doing the most dangerous assignments there are, and utilizing her Rynax imbued powers, Kurau's pair one night finally appears. All the years of hurt and lonesomeness are cancelled as Kurau and her pair - Christmas - are at last together. Now, Kurau, taking on only the most trivial assignments, she and Christmas spend their days together and try to make up for lost time.
But her skills as an agent has not gone unnoticed, and the government, believing she is the Rynax infested Kurau (who is presumed dead), set out to track her down.
And so starts the hunt for the now two Rynax beings. A hunt which takes them to the US Austria and even the Moon. Places which they of course speak perfect Japanese in this future world.
Kurau Phantom Memory such a rarity as a series with a good mix of action, drama and story. And while it does slip into a somewhat repetitive 'Fugitive' type state at times, where they are caught by the bad guys and then escape, the underlying story which propel the characters forward is good, compelling and dare I say, even touching. Because it is touching, Kurau who has lived all these years alone, finally reunited with her pair, is changed, but must take in use her violent powers to protect herself and Christmas.
And her chasers, a government agent with the best of intentions, trying to make her dead father proud, swallowing the lies of her superiors. It all makes for a suspenseful watch.
The music choice for the show is quite good, perhaps overly dramatic at times, an indicator of the animation not managing to bring across the full experience as it should be, that though perhaps. The opening and ending, both musically and visually, might trick you. Girls in pretty dresses with pretty JPop backdrop, showing only one side to this show, putting off perhaps the ones wanting the action. But there is plenty of it in this show, no worries.
The overall visual experience is quite pleasant, while ridged in movement at times, facial and overall backdrop makes up for anything lacking. And animation as a whole is of course as stunning as one has come to expect in the most recent years.
A good show, with a rare mix of action tenderness and good plot. Not in the overall top list of shows, but recommended all the same.
